Los Ojos is pleased to present the gallery’s first solo show, a selection of new works by the painter Brian Matthew Blair.
Blair’s starkly split canvases raise broad questions about observation, documentation, sociology, and economics. Textured blocks of black end abruptly, revealing glimpses of possibly familiar objects—floral specimens, rough-hewn pottery, knives. The mystery of the partially-obscured objects is only heightened by runes scratched into the black fields.
In observing these enigmatic paintings, we are forced to wonder: where do these decontextualized relics fit in the course of contemporary history? What is or was their function, and how does this affect our perception of their place and use?
Brian Matthew Blair received his MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He lives and works in New York.
